Christina Landman interview on Rian (Kyknet)

January 29, 2007

Most people in the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) will know Christina Landman for her controversial statements in the media (or at least that what the media wants us to believe!), her statements on pre-marital sex for elderly couples, polygamy that should be legalised in certain instances.  Stuff which I obviously do not support, but it should be said that I really do admire this lady and that the interview on Rian (which were re-broadcast yesterday – as it goes with South African television!) really inspired me, and helped me to realise again what Christianity is all about and how ministers and theologians can take part in bringing a relevant message to the people of South Africa.

Prof. Landman is very much involved in counselling at the Emergency Unit at Kalafong hospital near Attarigeville – Pretoria (not sure how it is spelled!).  There she also works with prostitutes and help them survive the live that they lead, helping them to get out of the gutters – If this is appaling to you I suggest reading John 4 again!

Landman says that she believes in faith healing, where people are lead to realise that their beliefs about themselves aren’t in line with what God has planned for them, people are then freed from these lies and she has seen people throwing away their crutches because of these insights.

I am fully aware of the fact that I myself isn’t perfect and that there are places where I need to be pulled into the right direction myself, but I can really associate with the work she is doing, with the difference she is making, and that I would like to make the same difference.  That I would like to make the face of Jesus known to His people and that I would like to do it in a practical way, even if it means getting out of my comfort zone – visiting a jail for 13 months like she has and reporting the problems to the wardens.

Helping people to be free from the guilt that they have been dragging along with them for some years now.  And really getting involved in spreading God’s gospel – the good message – rather than pointing fingers and sitting on my butt – like most ”christians” are fond of doing.

(Joh 4:23 MSG) But the time is coming–it has, in fact, come–when what you’re called will not matter and where you go to worship will not matter. “It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship.

    Hello :-)

I agree with your statement that most cristians just sit on their (as well as our) behinds watching the world falling further and furhter from God. But the question is how do we as christians approach these people that don’t know God?

Walking up to them, armed with a Byble and reading to them, appals most people, so that’s not going to work (there are exceptional cases sometimes I think). I feel that we should mingle with non-believers and talk about our own experiences as christians, but how does one do that? Just start a normal conversation that will lead to a conversation about God?

I’m really confused about this. Just the other day one of my friends felt a little depressed about himself. So I sent him the following messages: Psalm 60:14 “With God on our side we will conquer…” and Jesaja 43:4 (don’t know the english, sorry) “Becuase you are valuable to Me, becuase I value you high and becuase I love you…” (This was from an afrikaans Byble so the translation is probably wrong).

Was this the right thing to do? He didn’t say much afterwards but at least I tried. Is it enough just to try? Without thrusting it down someones throaght. Without forcing them to listen to what you have to say. Just trying to do something in the hope that some part of the message will go through.

I truely believe that one can only have an input into someone’s life (have the right to talk to someone) when you know them a bit better. Okay I spoke to some people about God without knowing them from Adam (or Eve!). But I feel safest in how someone interpret what I am saying when I get to know them a bit better and the same for them!

Encouraging a friend is one of the great ways of being a witness and as long as you aren’t forcing your values onto other people it shows them that you have respect for them and their intelligence.

Actions speak louder than words! Cliche but true. I’d rather learn from someone by seeing that they are living what they are preaching (when they are preaching ;-) ).

When one becomes a Christian you can’t help but witnessing, and that is a very good thing! It is what God enabled us to do (Acts 1:8 and Matt 28:19-20) it is what He wants, and I’m glad you did it because it is a very important way of thanking God for His grace and love.

In the end we as Christians can’t convince anyone of God’s grace, that is the work of the Holy Spirit. But well done on doing your bit, by acknowledging the power of what God did for you.

    A tipical “do it yourself-gospel” approach…

(Deu 31:17) Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

O Lord have mercy, have mercy… i am a sinner
